Frauds & Scams
International students can be particularly susceptible to frauds and scams – please be vigilant as you secure housing. Read these tips to avoid being a target:
Don’t wire or send money for fees, last month’s rent or damage deposit without seeing the unit in person and signing a lease. Avoid dealing with a landlord who says he is out of the country. The safest negotiation is face to face.
Don’t rely on photos or promises. Make sure you visit any place you are consider renting.
If you are told you don’t need a lease, if you are asked to pay extra fees upfront, or are being pressured into handing over money, it is a bad sign.
Do your research. Most room rentals in Brantford at $400-$575, if a room is being advertised for a price lower than $400, it could be a scam.
Scan any email attachments for computer viruses before opening.

Conestoga has compiled a list of landlords who are willing to rent to international students – these units/landlords have not been screened by Conestoga, and we encourage you to perform your due diligence on all landlords. You may contact landlords directly from this link:
Try online searches such as Places4students; Kijiji; Student Housing, viewit.ca
Go to our Facebook web page to view or post an ad for housing International Office Facebook
Rents range from $450 (single room) to $1000+ per month (one/two bedroom apartments).
Few landlords allow single room sharing and most will ask you to sign an 8-12 month lease (a legally binding contract).
Confirm that the location is close to your campus using Google Maps and GRT Trip Planner, and know your rights and responsibilities with Landlord Tenant Act information.
If you do not find housing before you arrive in Canada or you cannot move in on the day you arrive, YOU MUST ARRANGE TEMPORARY ACCOMMODATION – find a hotel list here under “Temporary Stay.”

We look forward to welcoming you to Canada and we will be in touch again soon with more information. In the meantime, check out our website and our Facebook page.
